Little Oceanographers is a science outreach project of the Institut de Ciències del Mar of Barcelona (ICM-CSIC) that brings oceanography into primary school classrooms through an experiential, hands-on approach to science.
The oceans cover most of our planet and play a fundamental role in maintaining climate balance. To protect them, we must understand—starting from an early age—the values and resources they provide to humanity.
Little Oceanographers aims to nurture children’s innate curiosity and turn them into young scientists through research and experimentation in ocean physics. Through the project, students connect with researchers during an oceanographic campaign and have the opportunity to take part in a simulated campaign aboard the Santa Eulàlia vessel at the Barcelona Maritime Museum. Throughout the school year, participants independently develop a marine research project and present their results at the Little Oceanographers Congress: a dynamic event where they share their learning and discoveries about the ocean with other schools, and where they also get to visit the laboratories and facilities of the Institut de Ciències del Mar.
